When I took part in Google Code-In, I came to know about various open source organisations, one of them being FOSSASIA. It is a non-profit organization supporting developers and makers of Free and Open Source technologies. Founded by Hong Phuc Dang and Mario Behling, the aim of FOSSASIA is to develop and adapt open technologies for social change with a focus on Asian users.
Earlier this year, a coding workshop was conducted at my school. After attending the workshop I was quite pumped up and made it my dream that one day I would also become a coder and started working to chase my dreams.
I like to code and this one of the reason that I joined for. Code-In is a great platform for students under the age of 18 to exhibit their technical skills. Just the way I became inspired by it, I hope many other like me, out there, would get motivated and do something that could make this world a better place!
In a world which is full of proprietary software with no space for modulations, Open Source offers a huge respite and opens many avenues for customisations. No wonder, it is in great demand these days. There many reasons why open source platform is better; some of them being lower cost, security, no vendor ‘lock in’, and better quality.
Open Source software provide a huge platform for coders and developers to exhibit their skills on the source code available openly to everyone, and that too with all the legal rights to manipulate it. FOSSASIA has taken the world of Open Source to a whole new level with its outstanding application for various platforms.
The open source projects by FOSSASIA have fascinated me. I always wanted to become a part of a prestigious organisation. there many great projects out there but some of my favorites are:
It is a great initiative by FOSSASIA team and is one of my personal favorites. This is one of the best photo editor available. Using this makes picture editing and sharing, on android devices, a cakewalk.
It is an interactive game designed by FOSSASIA community. This game is quite similar to the classic flappy bird game that all of us might have played at some point in our lives. But this comes with a twist. We can customize the backgrounds and the characters, as per our preferences.
This is an open source app developer. It consists of 2 parts: the 1st part being the web app which collects the details about the event and the 2nd part that builds an android app as per the details provided. The interface of the app can then be manipulated as per the user’s need.
I’m sure this must’ve piqued your curiosity about open source projects in general, and FOSSASIA in particular, to a great extent. To know more about FOSSASIA and Code-In, kindly visit the following links:
